The
quality of the water we drink is often taken for granted.
It is only when it tastes funny, has an odor, or changes
visibly are most people concerned.
Depending upon the source of your water, this may be a very
good assumption. If
you are getting your water from a public drinking water supply (city
or similar system), then you may rest assured that your water should
be safe. The
USEPA has laws regulating public drinking water supplies, which
are designed to protect you.
If you have your own well or water system and have not had
it tested, you may be at risk. Analysis of water from private wells and water systems needs
to take into consideration the vicinity of the well in addition
to any concerns that the user may have.
We
have assembled some resources to assist you in understanding water quality
issues. You can learn about
water quality regulations, both for drinking water and for rivers and
streams. You can learn what
is involved in maintaining a water well or how you can help people in a
developing country get safe drinking water.
